Why Meet Cute Is Still Celebrating Pride Month
It’s hard to feel pride when we’re consumed by fear. That's exactly why we need to come together.
Happy Pride Month, everyone.
This isn’t what anyone expected June 2020 would look like. Our communities are being torn apart by disease, isolation and violence. Many of us are grieving lost loved ones and upended financial situations. It’s hard to imagine celebrating as we’re surrounded by images of death, despair and violence. It’s hard to feel pride when we’re consumed by fear, anger and helplessness.
We had a big, happy, glitter-packed newsletter planned for today announcing our month-long LGBTQ+ Pride Party. After the events of this weekend, we decided to scrap that draft and just be honest. Pride Month was already going to be strange during COVID-19, but the death of George Floyd disturbed all of us. As we celebrate Pride Month, we recognize its roots in the Stonewall Uprising, a riot caused by the raiding of queer spaces and brutal violence against queer people, in particular queer people of color. History is a harsh parallel to today’s reality.
LGBTQ+ pride isn’t just about rainbows and corporate-sponsored parade floats. It’s about fighting for civil rights and justice for everyone, no matter their sexual orientation, their gender identity, or their race.
This moment hurts because we need each other more than ever, and yet we can’t safely gather in person at our favorite queer spaces. But it’s more important than ever that we come together as a community to celebrate human dignity, identity and connection.
So, on that note…
Here at Meet Cute, we believe that everyone deserves a happily-ever-after, no matter their sexual orientation or gender identity. To celebrate Pride Month 2020, we’re publishing four original LGBTQ+ romantic comedies during the first week of June. By highlighting queer stories this whole week, we want to do our part to make sure that the romantic comedy genre is as diverse and thoughtful as its fanbase. Because let's be real — queer people deserve better representation and goofy, genuine, reciprocated love stories too.
Our first Pride Month story dropped this morning. It’s about a shy bartender at a jazz club who has to decide between staying in the closet at work… and a woman who hits all the right notes.

Plus, we’ve invited some friends…
Make sure to follow Meet Cute on social media so that you can join our Pride party all month long. We’ll be chatting with awesome LGBTQ+ creators, hosting watch parties of classic queer rom-coms, and honoring love in all of its forms.
Up first we’re chatting with Sav Rodgers about his documentary Chasing Chasing Amy, which examines the transformational impact that one queer, ‘90s rom-com had on him as a queer kid from Kansas, versus the controversial, lasting influence that Kevin Smith’s cult classic has had on the broader LGBTQ+ community. Join us live at 7PM EST on Wednesday, June 3rd on our Instagram, @meetcute.
And we have presents for you on Spotify!
If you want to binge-listen to some happy endings, you can dive into our full collection of LGBTQ+ stories. We’ve pulled them into a Spotify playlist, and we’ll be adding new stories all week.
Listen and subscribe to our full LGBTQ+ collection on Spotify here.
From all of us here at Meet Cute, we hope you’ll join us as we enjoy the beautiful truth that love is love. If you have any ideas or suggestions of LGBTQ+ rom-coms we should feature this month, let us know. Please stay safe, be kind to yourself, and love one another.
Be well,
M.C.
