Bedecked in black leather mini-shorts, hair-charms, and a spray-tan, I inhaled the faint smell of Porto-Potty through a thick gust of dust, waiting for my favorite musician, Nicolas Jaar, to take the stage. This was, of course, Coachella. Standing at the front of a sparse crowd with more room to dance than I’d had all weekend (everyone, it seemed, had chosen Lady Gaga), I knew I was with my kind—the real music buffs. Just as Nicolas Jaar played his opening notes, I turned toward the refreshing smell of eucalyptus in the air. A few feet away, a cute boy with a fanny pack was applying the pungent oil to his palms—a welcome olfactory respite from the scent of body odor and churros that pervades the festival. I asked him for a splash of oil, and we spent the next hour dancing to our favorite musician, smelling like a spa. We were glued the rest of the weekend in a platonic friendship. Lucky for us, we discovered we'd be living in the same city in a few months. He’d just moved to New York, where I was heading in a few months for grad school. After the festival while iMessaging one night, we found out we’d both be in France the same weekend—me, for my birthday, and him, for a friend’s wedding. I invited him to my birthday, and asked him if he needed a wedding date.
