Hello, friend! I don’t know about you, but I miss going to the movies — not enough to put on a mask and sit in a theater during a pandemic, but certainly enough to watch trailers on YouTube and fantasize about overpriced popcorn tubs. One silver lining of fall 2020 is that there are plenty of flicks and shows to race through online, from the comfort of your own bed. Here are five new rom-coms you may have missed!
🚨 The Rom-Com Radar 🎯
Hooking Up, now streaming on Amazon: After Bailey (Sam Richardson) receives a new cancer diagnosis and Darla (Brittany Snow) gets fired from her job as a sex columnist, these two strangers take a road trip to revisit every place that she’s boned. Raunchy? Yes. Full of heart? Also yes. Rent it on Amazon Prime here.
All Together Now, streaming on Netflix: A musically gifted high school student with aspirations to attend Carnegie Mellon, Amber (Auli’i Cravalho) balances work, life, and financial challenges with a smile. But when new obstacles threaten her dreams, Amber must learn to lean on the strength of her chosen family to move forward. Watch it now on Netflix here.
Love, Guaranteed, now streaming on Netflix: To save her small law firm, earnest lawyer Susan (Rachael Leigh Cook) takes a high-paying case from Nick (Damon Wayans Jr.), a new client who wants to sue a dating website that guarantees love. But as the case heats up, so do Susan and Nick's feelings for each other. Watch the movie on Netflix here.
Spontaneous, coming soon: In this new dark comedy, teenagers Mara (Katherine Langford) and Dylan (Charlie Plummer) have just begun dating when students at their high school begin to spontaneously combust. Spontaneous also stars Insecure’s Yvonne Orji. Watch Spontaneous in theaters on October 2, and online on October 6.
Emily in Paris, coming soon to Netflix: Tatler says Netflix’s new drama “may fill the void left behind by Sex and the City.” It stars Lily Collins as the titular Emily, a Chicago marketing executive who relocates to Paris for work. The new series was created by producer Darren Star, who was also behind Beverly Hills, 90210, Melrose Place, Sex and the City and Younger. The entire season drops on Netflix on October 2nd.

What inspired your Meet Cute series, “The Movers”?
I was actually looking for a new apartment in Los Angeles earlier this year, and it was a miserable experience. I spent weeks seeing dozens of units, and over time I noticed that there were a few other "regulars" that I would see at open houses. None of them fell in love with me, but it was comforting to think that a pair of apartment hunters might be able to find romance in an otherwise unpleasant situation. - Spencer
What was it like to write a rom-com for audio that couldn't be more than 15 minutes long?
We love thinking about sound effects as a way of establishing the environment and driving the story. Writers aren't usually expected to spend a lot of time thinking about the sonic landscape, but in a Meet Cute story all you have is what you hear, so every sound is important.
What’s your favorite rom-com?
“I celebrated seven consecutive childhood birthdays with a Sliding Doors slumber party, so it must be a favorite. I thought Gwenyth Paltrow was British until two years ago.” -Dana
“Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind is one of my favorite movies of all time. It takes the meet cute formula and gives it the twist of a sci-fi brain bender.” - Spencer
