We don’t know about you, but one thing we miss from pre-COVID-19 life is hanging out at our favorite local coffee shop. Whether you’re an herbal tea kind of guy or a badass who takes her coffee black, there’s something special about how your friendly neighborhood barista always spells your name right on your to-go cup. If you’re craving a cappuccino and some gossip about the regulars, our new series is just what you ordered…

✏️ Writer’s Spotlight: Magi Calcagne 📓
What inspired your Meet Cute series, “The Coffee Shop”?
The Coffee Shop series was inspired by my own beautiful community of artists in Los Angeles. There’s a cafe theater on the east side called Lyric Hyperion where many of us (pre-Covid) congregated regularly. Any time you could go there and run into a friend or collaborator or someone you admire. I met my current partner there! I wanted to write something that captures that community spirit and I thought Austin would be a fun backdrop for that.
What was it like to write a rom-com for audio that couldn't be more than 15 minutes long?
It’s a very fun challenge! Having a clear and specific outline is really helpful. Once I get that hard work out of the way, writing the script itself can just be playtime. Out of these restraints comes so much creativity and play. It’s fun to figure out new ways to play with this form.
What’s your favorite rom-com?
Of course the classic 2007 Andy Samberg masterpiece, Hot Rod!
